Three temporary FEMA disaster recovery centers opened this week in Caldwell, Trigg and Christian counties to assist residents who suffered loss from the late May tornadoes, severe storms, landslides and mudslides.

Another center opens today at the Calloway County Fairgrounds west of Murray.

The Caldwell County Disaster Recovery Center opened Tuesday at the county’s Emergency Operations Center in Princeton.

Other centers that opened this week are located at the Trigg Emergency Operations Center, and at the Hopkinsville Public Works complex.

The disaster recovery centers are tentatively scheduled to be in place for about 30 days.

Homeowners and renters in 15 counties can apply for FEMA assistance at any of the centers. FEMA representatives will help with applications for federal assistance and provide information about other disaster recovery resources.

Assistance may include money for basic home repairs, transportation, medical needs, childcare and funeral or dental expenses.

In addition to FEMA personnel, representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration and agencies from the Commonwealth of Kentucky will be on hand. The centers will be open daily from 10 to 7 except Sundays.

It’s not necessary to go to a center to apply for FEMA assistance. Survivors can go online to disasterassistance.gov , call 800-621-3362 or use the FEMA mobile app to apply.

Thirteen tornadoes struck Kentucky during the severe weather outbreak during the Memorial Day weekend that left five people dead. The strongest was a 160-mph EF-3, damaging a 35-mile path through Lyon, Caldwell and Hopkins counties. As a result, 26 counties and 12 cities declared local states of emergency, while Gov. Beshear issued one for the entire state.
