As Kentuckians prepare to gather with loved ones this Thanksgiving, the Kentucky State Police is reminding drivers to make safety a top priority before hitting the road. Thanksgiving weekend remains one of the busiest travel periods of the year, with thousands of motorists traveling Kentucky's interstates, highways and rural roads.

To promote safe travel, KSP will take part in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort), a national traffic safety initiative coordinated by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. From now through Sunday,, KSP troopers will increase patrols across the commonwealth to identify and deter impaired, distracted and aggressive driving behaviors.

KSP reminds motorists to follow these safety tips throughout the holiday weekend:

  • Plan Ahead: If your celebration includes alcohol, arrange a safe ride before drinking. Use a designated driver, rideshare service or stay overnight.
  • Buckle Up: Seat belts save lives and remain your best defense against injury in a crash. It's the law.
  • Report Unsafe Drivers: If you observe dangerous driving or hazardous conditions, contact your nearest KSP Post or local law enforcement agency.

KSP encourages all Kentuckians to drive responsibly, remain patient in traffic and allow extra travel time during the holiday rush.
