Installation of new high-tech striping is taking place on a 14-mile section of I-24.
The new retroreflective pavement marking tape is designed to increase visibility so motorists can clearly see lane markings in all weather conditions. The tape is embedded with abrasion-resistant microcrystalline ceramic beads to better reflect light at night.
The traffic striping is expected to last up to 10 years, compared to four or five years for normal traffic paint.
The new striping has already been put down in Lyon and Caldwell counties between the 55 and the 58 mile marker in Lyon and Caldwell counties.
This week, an additional section of I-24 in Trigg County will be striped from the 58 to the 64 mile marker.
As part of a multi-step process, a contractor is using a truck mounted power washer, scrubber, and vacuum head to remove the old traffic paint, followed by spraying adhesive on the concrete that bonds the plastic tape to the concrete surface.
