Personnel from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will be on the lookout for signs placed in the highway right-of-way.
The law prohibits political, yard sale, property sale signs and the like from being placed on state property. Political signs, in particular, are becoming a problem with Primary Election Day coming up in May.
"Our highway right-of-way has been flooded with political signs in many of our counties," KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer Kyle Poat said. "State law gives the Transportation Cabinet the authority to remove illegal signs from state property."
Poat said the right-of-way can be from 15 to 30 feet from the pavement edge. In addition to being a distraction, the signs can cause problems for mowing crews.
Also of note, it is illegal to attach flyers, signs, or anything else, to utility poles and road signs.
Materials removed are taken to KYTC facilities in each county. KYTC keeps the items for a brief time, and are then disposed of if they are not claimed.
