A preliminary hearing is being held today for a Cairo man accused of trying to run over a Ballard County Sheriff's deputy.

On January 28, the deputy stopped a vehicle driven by Chaz Bradshaw in a convenience store parking lot in Wickliffe. Bradshaw started to walk into the store but returned to his car at the request of the deputy.

Bradshaw was asked for identification which he said was in the vehicle. Reportedly, the deputy could smell marijuana and spotted a gun in the driver's seat of Bradshaw's car.

Bradshaw is said to have climbed into the car to sit on and conceal the gun. The deputy had to pull Bradshaw out of the car when he would not get out on his own. Bradshaw resisted and a scuffle ensued. He then jumped back in his car and closed the door.

As the deputy headed back to his car, Bradshaw allegedly threw his vehicle in reverse and backed up rapidly at the deputy, forcing him to jump out of the way to keep from being hit.

Bradshaw fled toward Cairo, where his vehicle was found covered by a tarp.

Bradshaw later turned himself in to Illinois police and was taken back to Ballard County.

Bradshaw's charges include attempted murder of a police officer, assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading police and criminal mischief.

The hearing was set for Tuesday at 10 a.m.
