Officials with the Christian County Public Schools district broke ground on a new consolidated high school on Friday.
After the ceremony, construction equipment began moving dirt on the $106 million first phase located on Fort Campbell Boulevard.
The new Hopkinsville Christian County Academy will combine Hopkinsville and Christian County High Schools, as well as Gateway Academy. The new school will be one of the state's largest by enrollment, with a capacity for 2,500 students.
Plans are for the 335,000-square-foot facility to be completed in three years, with the first classes in August of 2026.
The new high school will feature two gymnasiums, one of which will seat 3,200 fans for basketball. The first phase does not include athletic fields and a performing arts center.
Total cost of both phases are estimated to be $134 million. That's a far cry from the original bids received in 2022 of $199 million and $204 million, which the district couldn’t afford.
The 2022 construction bids, along with other costs, would have pushed the entire package to around $240 million — nearly double CCPS’s initial $115 million estimate. The school board took out elements considered less essential and rebid last November.
