The former executive director of HOPE Calloway pleaded guilty Monday to a number of theft by deception charges.
The Murray Sentinel reported in a social media post Nathan Carter pleaded to 19 counts of theft by deception and one amended count of thett by unlawful taking. Pursuant to the plea agreement, Carter's sentence of five years on each count to run concurrently, was diverted to three years on each count. He will also pay $100,000 in restitution.
Carter of Kirksey, was arrested in February of this year. The arrest came following a financial review at HOPE Calloway when Carter transitioned out of his leadership role.
Board members were alerted to concerns after Carter told them in late 2025 that the nonprofit was “running out of money” and would need another fundraiser. The board then authorized an independent review
