An animal celebrity in western Kentucky passed away last week.
The Woodlands Nature Station reported the passing of Jasper, a male American Red Wolf. Jasper was 14 and a half years old. Less than 1% of male red wolves live past 14 years.
Jasper sprung into the national news last year after he successfully sired 4 healthy pups at the age of 13. He was the oldest red wolf to successfully breed and gave the Red Wolf Captive Breeding Program a boost of very important genetics. Jasper's pups Trace, Piney, Ginger, and Sugar remain as residents in LBL.
There are only 200 red wolves in the world, 95% in captivity. The only place to find the critically endangered wild red wolves in the wild is Eastern North Carolina.
Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is one of 50 partner facilities with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the US Fish & Wildlife Service to raise red wolves. Since 1992, the Woodlands Nature Station has had four litters of red wolves.
Friends of Land Between the Lakes at Woodlands Nature Station invites families to celebrate Wolf Week during fall break beginning this weekend.
From this Sunday through Oct. 7, visit the Nature Station’s endangered red wolves and catch special wolf programs every day, including "Red Wolf Treat Time" each day at 1:30pm.
