Western Kentucky has finally improved a notch from its extreme drought conditions of the past few months, according to the National Weather Service.
Last week's Drought Monitor from the Department of Agriculture shows recent timely rains have allowed all western Kentucky counties to improve to severe drought status, along with most of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri.
Extreme drought (red area of map) is still indicated for most of Massac, Pulaski and Alexander counties in southernmost Illinois.
Topsoil and subsoil conditions remain in poor condition in many areas but are showing minor improvement in upper layers due to recent rain.
Many areas are still more than 5 inches below normal on rainfall since September 1.
