Temporary fixes are helping to bring the Eddyville sewer plant back online after a massive failure.

Eddyville Mayor Greg Greene and Lyon County Judge Executive Jaime Smith issued a joint statement Thursday indicating that short-term solutions are in place. They said that a temporary wastewater treatment system went online at about 2 p.m. Wednesday and part of their long-term plan will begin operating Thursday.

What is not known is what caused the catastrophic failure in the Sequential Batch Reactor tank. A structural engineer was in Eddyville Wednesday to assess the damage. Officials said that the engineer is going to issue a report on what may have caused it, but said that a full investigation could take up to a year and cost several hundred thousand dollars.

The anticipation is that the system will be in full operation next week depending on the weather.
