Officials have set a tentative date for the explosive demolition of the old Cumberland River Bridge on US 60 at Smithland.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said the demolition is currently set for October 20, weather permitting.
Prep work began on the 92-year-old structure this week. Once the main deck is removed, key locations will be cut into the main truss before placing explosives to bring down the truss and approach spans.
Demolition of the old bridge will require the new bridge to close for several hours. In addition, commercial tow boat and pleasure boat traffic will need to be halted for 24 hours on the Cumberland River.
