Damage surveys by the National Weather Service confirmed that two EF-1 tornadoes touched down on Saturday morning, one in the city of Hickman and the other north of Fulton in Hickman County.
The first tornado was on the ground at 8:58 am for two minutes in Hickman city limits, with peak winds of 105 miles per hour. It traveled east for 1.2 miles with a maximum width of 350 yards.
Damage in the city of Hickman began on Terrace Drive and Sunset Street with damage to trees and power lines. A large tree fell onto a home on Myron Cory Drive. The most damage occurred when it crossed KY-125 and 7th Street, with power line damage and several trees uprooted, including one that fell onto a car.
The second tornado touched down at 9:13 am for three minutes with peak winds of 105 miles per hour. It had a northeast path of 2.6 miles north of the city of Fulton and west of Water Valley. It had a maximum width of 275 yards.
Damage from the second tornado included around two dozen trees blown down and a grain bin destroyed on Laine Road. More tree damage took place all along the path, then just before it lifted, the storm blew a tree onto a house on Wilson Road.
According to National Weather Service statistics, August is a rare month for toradoes in western Kentucky. Only 50 tornadoes have touched down this month since 1950, and most of those happened in the afternoon or evening.
Along with the two on Saturday, only 3 other August tornadoes traveled more than a mile.
