After being closed for construction since mid-April, and an additional two-week delay to rework some concrete, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reopened a busy section of Old Mayfield Road in Paducah.
On July 14, the road was on the verge of opening when engineers found a drainage issue that required about 200 feet of pavement and some of the curb line to be reworked.
Old Mayfield Road had been closed since April 17 between Irvin Cobb Drive and Division Street, affecting busy intersections with Alabama Street, Quarles Avenue, South 25th Street, and Chester Hack Drive.
Along with the new concrete surface, the $1.5 million project includes a better gravel foundation, new gutters and drain boxes that will allow better drainage during storms, an issue that has plagued the neighborhood for years..
Some finish work and landscaping will continue to take place and may cause intermittent brief delays for a few more weeks.
