Cairo man sentenced in shooting death

A Cairo man was sentenced Thursday following an investigation into a 2023 shooting death in Alexander County, IL.

Illinois State Police said 43-year-old Samuel L. Lewis received a 70 year sentence, including 45 years for first degree murder plus an additional 25 years due to the statutory firearm enhancement. 

On May 9th of last year, Lewis was arrested in connection with the shooting death of 34-year-old Lafayette D. Woods, which occurred in the 2400 block of Sycamore Street in Cairo.
