There's a possibility Brooks Stadium could have turf on its infield, possibly as early as next seaspn.
Durning Monday night's McCracken Fiscal Court meeting, Brooks Stadium Commission president Jay Smith asked the court for a letter of support in an effort to get state funding for the surface.
The board is seeking the turf infield for three reasons.
First, the cost to maintain the grass infield is becoming unaffordable and a board member tells West Kentucky Star it's the commission's biggest expense.
Second, the commission feels it would give them the chance to host the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament as Murray State is scheduled to host the event next year.
In the past, Brooks Stadium has hosted the Ohio Valley Conference baseball tournament and Murray State has played the University of Kentucky on several occassions there.
Finally, having the turf infield would allow the stadium to be used for other events such as concerts.
The cost to place the turf is $500-600,000 dollars.
Paducah's Board of Commissioners and the Paducah Chamber of Commerce have already provided letters of support.
