The City of Benton was awarded nearly $900,000 in federal transportation funds for construction of sidewalks and improved access to over 70 businesses.
The funding comes from the Federal Transportation Alternative Program. Senator Danny Carroll said the funds will help Benton and its residents in numerous ways.
He said, "These improvements will accommodate pedestrian traffic and positively impact both the local economy and the lives of those who live here."
The projects will include the construction of five-foot-wide sidewalks along at least seven streets, connecting residents to local businesses. The sidewalks will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Carroll commended city officials for their initiative in applying for the funds and encouraged other communities to apply.
"TAP funding is something I would encourage all local communities to apply for where there are projects that meet the federal program's criteria." Carroll continued, "I look forward to seeing the completion of this project and appreciate all involved in making it possible."
The program provides funding for transportation projects such as on and off-road pedestrian and bicycle lanes, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, environmental mitigation, and safe school route projects. Awards cover 80 percent of program costs.
