The McCracken County Mustangs fell just short in their opening round game of the boys Sweet Sixteen state basketball tournament on Wednesday, falling to Elizabethtown 48-44.

The Panthers were led by 6-10 center Ayden Evans' 21 points, who also had seven blocked shots. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Connor Miller with 15, and Jack McCune with 14.

In spite of the height disadvantage, McCracken County outrebounded the taller Elizabethtown squad 36-19, led by Miller with 12, and Ian Hart who pulled down 9.

McCune and Hart also combined for seven blocked Panther shots.

The Mustangs end their season with a record of 29-6.

The Panthers (24-9) move on to Friday's quarterfinals to face Woodford County (21-12), which advanced with a 60-57 victory in overtime against Jeffersontown earlier in the day.

Lyon County (30-5) will begin their Sweet Sixteen journey on Friday at 12:30 local time against Newport. All state tourney games can be heard on 99.5 The Fan.
