Firefighters in southeast Missouri battled a pair of large wildfires that burned nearly a thousand acres of national forest on Wednesday.
According to Mark Twain National Forest personnel, the Beason Hollow Fire was part of a cluster of six fires located 15 miles southwest of Salem and 50 miles northwest of Poplar Bluff. The fire was expected to reach about 650 acres in size by the end of the day. Meanwhile the Barn Log Fire, located 10 miles south of Winona, Missouri, burned about 230 acres by nightfall.
Firefighters reported both blazes contained by around 10 pm Wednesday.
Earlier this week, 400 acres were burned in a series of grass and cover fires in Iron County.
Much of southern Missouri has also been affected by recent grass and field fires that are even more prevalent into Arkansas and Oklahoma. A handful of smaller localized grass fires have also been affecting southwestern Illinois over the past week.
