More than two dozen tourists were trapped inside the St. Louis Arch for two hours on Monday when the cable for six tram cars jammed and locked into place.

The passengers were never in danger, since it was a safety mechanism that locked down the cable. The tram cars were about 100 feet above the loading zone.

Officials said the passengers all remained calm during the incident, and were kept informed through a PA system about the progress to remove them from the trams.

St. Louis firefighters arrived and evacuated the passengers, who received a refund for their tickets.

The trams on the north side of the Arch were still closed on Tuesday so that the cables could be replaced.
