This week the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a $6.8 million grant towards a new USDA meat processing facility in southern Illinois.

Saline River Farms will develop the 83,000 square-foot plant, which will be located north of Creal Springs in Williamson County. The USDA forecasts that it will process 40 million pounds of beef and 19 million pounds of pork annually.

The new plant project will create more than 400 jobs. Construction crews plan to break ground next spring. The new facility is expected to take 15 to 18 months to complete.

WFCN reported that the federal grant is part of $73 million distributed to 21 projects through the first round of the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program.
