The mudslide occurred on the property of Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, a spokesperson for the distillery’s parent, Sazerac Co. Inc., said in a statement.
The mudslide occurred under the water pipes along the trees at the edge of the river. Part of the pavement next to their dry house also collapsed. The mudslide sent a cargo container and the temporary office down the bank into the Kentucky River.
No employees were near the area at the time of the mud slide. The affected property was roped off to ensure the safety of those at the distillery.
Whiskey production continues as well as tours of the distillery.
Flooding is woven into the 200-plus-year history of the distillery. Several markers dating back to 1883 indicate the high-water marks that have made their way into the distillery buildings. More recently, the high-water mark for Frankfort occurred on March 4, 1978. It was about a foot higher than the Great Flood of 1937.
River water is used for cooling as well as for fire suppression.
