A proposed bill seeks to ban cell phone use by students in Kentucky classrooms.
Republican State Rep. Josh Bray said you can't teach students who are distracted.
Bray calls the legislation a common sense approach to stop the use of texting and social media during school hours. He said he's heard from teachers who said the distractions make their jobs more difficult.
"We've seen a drastic increase in mental health issues. We've seen an increase in suicides. Test scores aren't where we want them to be, so we just thought that this was common sense," Bray said to Fox News over the weekend.
Florida classrooms came under a similar ban last year, and proponents said the measure has helped students actually converse with each other more often and cut down on distractions.
A North Carolina middle school also removed mirrors from the girls' bathrooms, because students were leaving class several times a day to make TikTok videos.
Bray's bill would allow exceptions only for emergencies.
