The World Meteorological Organization announced Tuesday that the names of deadly hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton will be retired, meaning they will no longer be in the rotation for naming storms.

Typically, names are repeated every six years, but when a storm becomes deadly, the name is retired from the list.

This also means new names join the list. Beryl will be replaced by Brianna; Helene by Holly; Milton by Miguel; and John by Jake.

Hurricane Helene was the deadliest hurricane since Katrina, killing more than 230 people.

Hurricane Beryl was the earliest Atlantic basin Category 5 hurricane on record. It caused 64 deaths.

Hurricane Milton was reported to have caused 15 direct deaths; 12 in Florida and three in Mexico. A tornado also killed six people in Florida.

The WMO says hurricanes are named to help communicate storm warnings and alert people about potentially life-threatening risks.
