Four people died Sunday in Kentucky as severe storms tore through the state, dropping several tornadoes and leaving tens of thousands of people without power.

A 67-year-old Mercer County woman, a 62-year-old Hardin County woman, a 48-year-old Hopkins County woman and a 34-year-old Jefferson County man were killed Sunday, authorities said. One other man is hospitalized and said to be "fighting for his life."

The Jefferson County death happened just after noon Sunday, Louisville Metro Police said when man was hit by a tree during cleanup efforts.

The Hardin County EMA Director said the 62-year-old woman who died Sunday suffered cardiac arrest while going down the stairs of her home during the tornado warning in Radcliff.

Officials know of a few tornadoes that definitively touched down in Kentucky, one of which rolled through the southwestern part of the state for at least 40 miles, barely missing the Kentucky State Penitentiary at Eddyville, as well as Princeton and Dawson Springs.

National Weather Service staff went out in force on Monday to survey the damage from their offices in Paducah and Louisville. They estimate it will take at least a week to visit all of the damage sites that could have been the result of a tornado.
