Experts expect more than 42 million people will hit the road, traveling more than 50 miles over Memorial Day weekend.
According to AAA, that represents a 7% increase or some 2.7 million more people will be traveling than did in 2022.
While most, over 37 million, will drive to their destination, around 3.4 million will take to the skies to kick off the summer travel season. Forecasts indicate that air travel will surpass pre-pandemic levels, while highway travel will be about a half million below 2019.
AAA said that, nationally, Orlando, Las Vegas, and New York City are the top destinations for holiday travelers. They also said that cruise bookings are up 50% from a year ago. Port cities in Alaska, Florida, as well as Seattle, have climbed the list of destinations. Anaheim, Boston, and Denver are on the list, too, along with Canton, Ohio.
