Long lines and computer glitches continue to cause grumbling at Kentucky's county clerk offices, as they move into their busiest time of the year for license renewals.
Kentucky's county clerks continue to work their way through the implementation of the state’s new vehicle registration system known as KAVIS, while converting from the nearly 50-year-old AVIS system.
March is the busiest month of the year in the county clerks’ motor vehicle departments. More than 960,000 renewal notices were mailed with a March expiration date, compared to 310,000 in January and 296,000 in February. March renewals include all farm tags, campers, trailers, and the start of boat renewal season.
However, there are still reported to be significant sytem delays which often results in lengthy wait times, or customers being forced to make multiple trips to try to complete transactions.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said that their KAVIS team is working seven days a week to correct the programming errors that plague the system.
The Kentucky County Clerks Association requests that customers to be as prepared as possible with proper docoumentation and ID when they visit their county clerk.
Renewals can also be made online on the KYTC’s website drive.ky.gov .
