The Better Business Bureau is warning the public of wrong number text scams
Text messages from unknown numbers with photos of a young woman are making the rounds nationwide
The messages all begin with the sender claiming to have met the recipient before and wanting to meet up. The text contains photos, usually of a young blonde or redheaded woman.
When the recipient replies, the sender pretends to have accidentally texted the wrong number, but continues sending replies.
The BBB is warning the public that these supposed wrong number texts are from chat bots, and it is best to not respond. By responding the recipient confirms their phone number is valid, leading to scammers selling their number to advertisers.
Sacmmers also use chat bots while attemping to gain personal or financial information from victims.
The BBB encourages the public to ignore texts from strangers, block numbers that appear to come from scammers, and to never provide personal information to strangers.
