Work on a two-year-long, $23 million highway project is about to ramp up in Ballard County.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will make preparations to begin construction of a new 4-lane corridor of US 60 to extend from the existing 4-lane roadway south of USEC, to run parallel to the existing two-lane highway, then bypass the city of Kevil to the south, where it will rejoin the existing highway west of the city just past the S-curve. Officials say the project will improve safety and efficiency for travelers on the new corridor that already carries more than 7000 vehicles every day, including a large number of semi trucks.
Brush clearing will begin in the next few weeks to set the stage for extensive grading and drain work that will take place this summer on the new corridor. The initial round of work should not impact traffic on the existing portion of US 60.
Jim Smith Construction is the primary contractor for the project that is slated to be completed in June of 2026.
