Virtually all of western Kentucky is now officially considered to be experiencing drought conditions.

The latest map from the Department of Agriculture's drought monitor shows every western Kentucky county to be at the moderate drought level.

On last week's drought monitor map, only Fulton and Hickman county had reached a moderate drought level.

Southern Illinois is classified as abnormally dry in all counties, except for parts of the southernmost counties that share Kentucky's drought status.

Three months ago, there were no drought or abnormally dry areas in the region.

The current dry spell has been a recent event. In March, April and May, rainfall in our area was within 90 percent of the usual amount.  But since the beginning of June, less than 25% of normal precipitation has fallen in western Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service.
