The City of Paducah has been recognized by the Kentucky League of Cities as this year's City Government of the Year.

Paducah's selection was highlighted by the success of its Southside Rise & Shine Neighborhood Spruce-Up Initiative.

The program focused on cleanup of eight southside neighborhoods by city employees and more than 100 volunteers. During the effort, they combined to pick up 60 dumpsters worth of trash and more than a thousand discarded tires.

Each week of cleanup finished with an ice cream social for the neighborhood.

Work continues on the Southside, including future improvements to Robert Coleman Park.

Paducah will be recognized at the Kentucky League of Cities' conference in Owensboro this mont. Then, KLC representatives will come to Paducah for a formal presentation.

Mayor George Bray said, “All of the City Commission’s priorities are designed to elevate Paducah’s status and improve the quality of life for our citizens. The Southside initiative is a long-term project designed to breathe life back into an area of town where so many grew up and spent so much time in our youths. Our plan is to revitalize the eight Southside neighborhoods and instill a renewed sense of pride in that area."
