South American man arrested in Mayfield after giving false ID during traffic stop

A South American man was arrested on Tuesday after giving Mayfield Police false identifying information during a traffic stop.

Mayfield Police stopped a vehicle driven by 49-year-old Jose Trejo Vanegas of Colombia after observing several violations. During the stop, the man gave police several other names and birthdates before giving them the Trejo Vanegas name. He did produce photos of a Social Security card and a work visa with the Trejo Vanegas name and information. However, officers could not initially determine the validity of the documents.

Trejo Vanegas was arrested and charged with giving a false ID, no license, or insurance, in addition to other violations. Mayfield Police and federal authorities are working to confirm Trejo Vanegas's identity.
