Scam email targets Lyon County residents

Cybercriminals are targeting Lyon County residents and the sheriff's office is warning the public.

Deputies said they've received numerous complaints of a scam involving a fake McAfee antivirus email that appears legitimate.

The email warns recipients they have a virus on their computer, and asks for the victim's permission to remotely access the computer to repair the damage.

However, the sheriff's office said this is just an effort to steal important information such as banking details, social security numbers, and credit card numbers.

Anyone that receives the email is asked to forward it to spam@mcafee.com
