The once-in-a-generation experience of walking across the Mississippi River to Tower Rock could actually be available again in a few weeks.
Tens of thousands of curiosity seekers ventured into the river over the past several weeks of extremely low water levels between Chester and Cape Girardeau.
But sizable rains upstream caused the Mississippi to rise more than three feet last Monday. By Tuesday, the river was up enough to prevent people from walking to the massive stone island.
Now, Missouri Department of Conservation officials estimate Tower Rock could be accessible again by mid-November.
They say that without any more significant rain in the National Weather Service's longterm forecast, the Mississippi could fall back to the previous low water mark by November 16, and expose the stone path once again.
