After several nearby rainstorms failed to track over the city, storms last weekend and Monday night added substantial water to Marion's fallback reservoir, Old City Lake.
A total of 2.4 inches of rain fell at the water plant, and slightly more was reported in the lake watershed.
Old City Lake topped its overflow spillway for the first time since it had been reinforced with sandbags, which were washed away by the overflow.
City Administrator Adam Ledford indicated that having new water in the lake gives the water management team some breathing room and will allow them to purge some lines. The move is also hoped to raise chlorine levels in the outer parts of the city, with the hope that water drawn from those lines will no longer have to be boiled.
