The Woodlands Nature Station is ready to open for the season this weekend, and a new resident is just getting settled in.
The new arrival is a Red Wolf named Percival coming from Zoo Knoxville. He joins his sister Ember, LBL's current female. They are 5-year-old littermates.
It's been a hectic several months of comings and goings for wolves in LBL. Last December, all four of their 18-month old litter were transferred to other wolf breeding facilities in New York, Washington, and Florida.
This was after their famous father, Jasper, passed away in September at the age of 14. Jasper made national news as the oldest red wolf to successfully breed in captivity and surprised LBL staff with the four pups in April of 2022.
Red Wolves are a critically endangered species. Less than 300 exist today, with 95 % of them living in captivity. The Woodlands Nature Station works in partnership with about 50 other zoos and nature centers to maintain and grow the captive population of Red Wolves.
Percival and Ember will be on exhibit when Woodlands Nature Station opens for the season on Friday.
