New Smithland bridge gets second concrete pour

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet took advantage of warm weather on Tuesday to start the second concrete pour on the main deck of the new US 60 Cumberland River bridge at Smithland.

Jim Smith Contracting anticipated putting down about 300 yards of concrete by the end of the day.

After the second pour is completed, workers will place grids of rebar to prepare for the third concrete pour on the deck in about two weeks.

They'll also be adding electrical conduit to be encased in the barrier walls on each side of the driving surface. Several more concrete pours will be scheduled once the conduit is in place.

Target completion date for all work on the new bridge is December 1.
