A Murray man who received national notoriety in cases involving a mule and a raccon made a court appearance on drug charges this week.

The Murray Sentinel reported Jonathan Mason, aka "Cowboy Cody" appeared for arraignment in Calloway Crcuit Court Monday on a felony charge of methamphetamine possession.

Mason entered a not guilty plea to charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance,  possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He will appear in court again August 17th.   The drug charges came to light when Calloway County Sheriff's deputies were serving a bench warrant regarding the mule case May 6th.

Mason’s legal issues started in December 2024 with two arrests in two days. The second turned into a police pursuit as he rode his mule down Fourth Street – a scene captured in videos that quickly went viral.

Then last year, Mason was arrested again after throwing a live raccoon into the Big Apple Grill and Bar, where an employee was bitten.

A felony assault charge was later amended, and Mason pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, wanton endangerment and  criminal trespassing.

The civil case involving the employee bitten is scheduled to go to trial next week.
