McCracken County Superintendent Dr. Nancy Waldrop notified the school board on Thursday afternoon that she will be retiring in June.
After a considerable amount of discernment about the future of McCracken County Schools, Superintendent Waldrop has decided that she will not accept another Superintendent contract for the 2014-2015 school year.
Dr. Waldrop accepted the Superintendent's position four years ago, when the district's goals called for vast transformation. Waldrop says there are only a few districts that have encountered such important simultaneous changes.
Improvements under Waldrop's supervision include the construction of the new McCracken County High School and implementation of the new Kentucky school reform, which included an upgrade to the national standards and classroom curricula. In addition the district has thrived during a bout of diminished finances because of the most intense economic downturn since the great depression.
During Waldrop's four years of service, McCracken County lost more than $11-million in funding. Superintendent Waldrop says despite the loss, the Board of Education along with the faculty and staff, under her leadership, have kept the promises of excellence to the students, families, teachers and taxpayers.
Waldrop says that extra-curricular programs are now supported by nearly $2 million from community sponsors. The district received $59,500 from the state for gifted and talented students, and grew it into a recognized program dedicating more than $750,000 to academic acceleration.
A new Mustang Madness Basketball Tournament scheduled in January is expected to bring $1.4 million to the local economy, according to Dr. Waldrop.
"As difficult as it is to believe, this has all been accomplished with no new taxes," Waldrop said. "I have been the point guard and public face of a 1,000 member team that has come together in powerful ways to accomplish much at high levels."
Superintendent Waldrop says she has benefited from the talented team at McCracken County, and that it's been a joy to be apart of it. She says her work as Superintendent over the past four years took a lot of energy and time, and now she plans to spend more time at church and volunteering to benefit children in the county.
