Cairo Road in Paducah is becoming a major road construction site at the I-24 exit beginning this morning.

It'll be a 28-day series of closures and restrictions, kicking off a summer-long $3 million project to replace a stretch of pavement that's been deformed by semis visiting the truck stop at Exit 3.

A half-mile stretch of asphalt from Olivet Church Road to the westbound I-24 ramps will be replaced with a 10-inch-deep layer of concrete to better withstand the wear and tear of the heavy trucks.

Because of the extensive work and excavation, the Olivet Church Road intersection will be closed during initial construction. Local access to businesses on Cairo Road will be maintained, but trucks and motorists who would normally head west on KY 305 will have to I-24 Exit 4 and US 60. Illinois drivers who usually prefer the "back entrance" to the mall area will also have to continue to Exit 4.

Once the initial round of concrete work is completed, traffic will temporarily return to normal during Quilt Show Week. After the quilt show, work will resume with various traffic shifts from time to time to maintain near-normal traffic flow along KY 305 at the interchange.

Message boards will provide specific traffic information at the interchange.
