The region's second weather system of the week moving through today should be the least consequential, with less than an inch of rain for most of the region.

The only wintry consideration today will be west of a line from Cape Girardeau to Carbondale, where temperatures at freezing might cause some slick spots.

But by Friday night, rain returns through Saturday and could become heavy at times. Amounts of 1 to 4 inches are expected, with the higher amounts along the Kentucky-Tennessee border. Most of western Kentucky could receive around 3 inches.

These amounts would likely lead to flooding concerns including rises along area rivers that are already on the high side. Elsewhere, the usual low-lying flood-prone areas will be affected, along with lots of full ditches and standing water.

Behind all the rain, arctic air slides in next week with temperatures well below normal.
