A Murray man has been indicted after allegedly stealing mail from residential boxes.

A federal grand jury convened in Paducah handed down the indictment in March, according to U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky.

Wednesday afternoon December 18th, 2024, just after 2 p.m., callers to Calloway 911 said the driver of a vehicle in the Panorama Shores area was attempting to tamper with mailboxes. Deputies with the Calloway County Sheriff's Office located and stopped a vehicle reportedly driven by 34-year-old Austin Jones of Murray. Their investigation found that he had allegedly taken letters and packages from over a dozen mailboxes.

Jones made his first court appearance on Monday and is facing up to 5 years in prison if convicted on charges of theft of mail matter. A federal district judge will determine Jones' sentence.

There is no parole in the federal system.
