The heat advisory for our region continues to be in effect through Friday.
The forecast from the National Weather Service still calls for our temperatures to stay in the mid 90s into the weekend, and heat index readings between 100 and 107.
Nationally, the Great Plains states have been dropped from the advisory, but it's now locked in from Louisiana up the Mississippi River to north of St. Louis, and eastward for the rest of the nation to the Atlantic from Georgia to Maine. In fact, the entire East Coast has an even more serious extreme heat warning of 110 heat index or higher.
Here, daily isolated chances of showers and storms during peak heating will provide brief and limited relief from the heat wave. Locally torrential downpours and lightning is possible.
True relief from the heat wave still looks to be delayed until early next week with a greater risk of showers and thunderstorms.
