A Graves County grand jury returned indictments on Tuesday charging a Mayfield man with murder and fetal homicide from a 2025 crash that resulted in the death of a woman and her unborn child.

Last July 1, a single-vehicle crash occurred on Kentucky 408. A minivan ran off the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire.

The driver, 30-year-old Sherrod Shelton of Graves County, was found lying in the roadway with severe injuries. A passenger, 22-year-old Raye A. Jones also of Graves County was found deceased inside the vehicle.

Deputies said there was also evidence of a domestic disturbance that occurred inside the vehicle prior to the crash.

At the time of the indictment, Shelton was already incarcerated on unrelated Graves County charges stemming from an incident in November where a child suffered first degree cigarette-type burns to the childs body.
