The National Weather Service in Paducah issued a special weather statement Friday that the first widespread frost of the season is possible this weekend.
Meteorologists said a cool surface high pressure will overspread the region today. Air movement may keep temperatures in the upper 30s, which would be too warm tonight and Saturday morning for widespread frost, but sheltered areas in southern Illinois could see some patchy frost.
More widespread frost is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning. Temperatures may even dip below freezing in a few areas in the pre-dawn hours on Sunday.
Unprotected tender vegetation could be damaged or killed.
Next week will see a return of lows in the 50s, along with some afternoon highs near 80.
Paducah's average date for its first freeze (32 degrees) is October 26.
