The changes in traffic flow along Kentucky Avenue will become permanent, now that a 90-day traffic study is complete.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet conducted a study of the intersections of Kentucky Avenue with 5th and 6th Street to determine if they would function safely and efficiently without the current traffic signals.
Engineers determined that the light at Kentucky and 5th Street could be taken completely out without compromising safety or traffic flow. The 6th Street intersection will now be a four-way stop.
Initially, both intersections allowed Kentucky traffic to flow through the intersections without stopping, making cross-traffic on 5th and 6th wait. During the study, the 6th Street intersection was surveyed as a 4-way stop.
Engineers said that the 5th Street light could be removed next Tuesday. KYTC says more than 4,100 vehicles pass through that portion of Kentucky Avenue daily.
