A group made up of representatives from Calvert City's industrial community announced $3,972 in mini-grants for four area schools.

The Calvert City Community Advisory Team gives the mini-grants for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) projects at schools in Marshall and Livingston Counties.

The grants this fall are going to South Marshall Elementary, South Marshall Middle, Sharpe Elementary, and South Livingston  Elementary.

South Marshall Elementary is receiving $1,000 for a project called "Story Book Stem" for students in kindergarten through 5th grade.

At South Marshall Middle, 6th graders will take part in a program called "Bee Better: Save the Bees." The program was granted $1,000.

The 4th grade at Sharpe Elementary will receive $972 for a "Roller Coaster Challenge."

Another $1,000 is going to a 1st-grade class at South Livingston Elementary for a garden project called "Mrs. Keller's Garden."

Jeremy Rowe, Lead Plant Environmental Engineer at Arkema said, "As members of the Calvert City Community Advisory Team, we are pleased to continue to support the efforts of our local teachers, students, and school systems through our mini-grant program. Such efforts allow our teachers to teach the importance of pursuing students' interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We look forward to future collaborations with the schools in Livingston and Marshall Counties."

The group awards mini-grants in the spring and fall, based on applications from teachers. Major grants and scholarships are awarded, as well, in the spring.

Arkema, Ashland, Harsco Corporation, Carbide Industries, Cymetech Corporation, Estron Chemical, Evonik Corporation, Lubrizol Advanced Materials, Sekisui SC, Wacker Chemical, and Westlake Vinyls are the 11 companies in the Calvert City Community Advisory Team. The group was formed in 1992 to provide an avenue for interaction between the plants and the community.
