Paducah's Board of Commissioners discussed a rise in garbage collection rates during Tuesday evening's meeting.

Public Works director Chris Yarber noted garbage collecton rates have not increased since 2008.  Yarber presented a proposal to raise the current rate from residents from $16.50 to $24,50 per month with phased in implementation.  Business customers would also see a rate hike.  The commissioners will discuss the matter at their next scheduled meeting on November 14th.

In other action, Mayor George Bray talked about repairs to the Paducah and McCracken County Convention and Expo Centers.  Monday night, McCracken FIscal Court discussed the matter but took no action on what the next steps in the repair process would be.  Bray said the proceeds from the transient room tax collected by the county will be able to fund a bond to address many of the maintenance needs. The county has asked if the city would partner to fund, if needed, overages not covered by the transient room tax. Bray said the request was reasonable. The Convention Center Corporation is meeting next week to begin prioritizing the facility projects.

Mayor Bray also announced the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has proposed to convert five of the city’s traffic signals to all-way stops. The signals are at 9th and Broadway; 13th and Broadway; 21st and Broadway; 9th and Jefferson; and 6th and Jefferson. These intersections do not have enough traffic flow to warrant signals.
Converting to an all-way stop involves a transition of changing the signals to all-way red flashing for a period of time before the removal of the signals and installation of stop signs.
