More than 45 Graves County residents attended a public meeting concerning traffic changes proposed for the KY 121 Dick Castleman Bypass at Mayfield.

Engineers with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet were on hand with videos and displays to illustrate their proposal of constructing four roundabouts along the 3.5 mile section between KY 80 and US 45.

The roundabouts would be located at intersections with Charles Drive, Backusburg Road, East Broadway and Andrea Drive.

The design team also proposes a 10-foot wide multi-use trail along the side of the roadway.

Roundabouts are lauded by the U.S. Department of Transportation because they “can substantially reduce crashes that result in serious injury or death” and promote slower driving.

A 2022 estimate from an engineer says the U.S. has about 9,000 roundabouts, up from approximately 300 in the 1990s.

Anyone who was unable to attend the meeting may review displays and fill out a survey here to offer feedback.

Comments may also be submitted by mail before June 22 to Austin Hart, Branch Manager Project Development, KYTC District 1, 5501 Kentucky Dam Rd, Paducah, Kentucky 42003.

All written comments will become part of the official meeting record.
