Hundreds check in after 3.1 earthquake rattles southern Illinois

An earthquake in the Mt. Vernon area was reported Sunday night by hundreds of residents across southern Illinois.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake 30 miles north of Herrin had an intesity of 3.1. It occurred just after 10 p.m. on Sunday night.

As of Monday morning, almost 300 people checked in on the USGS website to say they felt the tremor. No damage was reported.
