Fans at the finish line of the Boston Marathon have heard "The Star-Spangled Banner'' today, after Meb Keflezighi became the first American to win the race since 1985.
Keflezighi ran the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds, amid tight security a year after bombs near the finish line turned the race into a scene of carnage. Three people were killed and more than 260 wounded in the attack.
Nearly 36,000 runners started this year's race, the second-largest field in its history.
Rita Jeptoo of Kenya successfully defended the Boston Marathon women's title she said she could not enjoy a year ago after the fatal bombings.
Jeptoo finished Monday's race in a course-record 2 hours, 18 minutes, 57 seconds. She becomes the seventh three-time Boston Marathon champion.
